RD2 '18: Demons vs Lions (Prem)

Wandsworth Demons 6.11.47 def North London Lions 4.4.40

After a convincing round 1 win a fortnight ago, we now had the Grand Final rematch, fully aware the Lions wanted revenge from last years narrow GF defeat. From our 2017 Premiership team we only had 8 premiership players playing, which is amazing when you think that was only 2 games ago. We also had 9 changes from the Wests game, along with 5 players playing their first club game for the Demons.

Rain was steady for most of the afternoon. With the wet conditions from the first bounce the ball was slippery and tough for both teams to get clean possession. It was clear early in the match both teams hand brought their best ‘pressure’ games from very early on. We did hold the momentum for a greater percentage of the quarter and kicked out to a two-goal lead, but it should have been 2 more. The second quarter saw us start to get on top in the middle. Harry Lahy and Jayden were finding plenty of possession and with a few favourable umpiring decisions saw us get out to a four-goal half time lead.

The rain seemed to like it was about to clear and if it did we were confident we would get clean first use and would get them on the spread and the game would break open. Instead the rain came down heavier which led to even more of a scrap. We had brought a good pressure game but for this quarter the Lions raised it. With the bulk of the quarter played in their forward line and with their crowd cheering them on behind the goals, they were able to cut our lead to 10 points. We were also down two soldiers with Joe Lloyd and Bevo both coming off second best in separate collisions. Lions went into the final term with all of the momentum.

The game was there to be won. The rain wasn't stopping, so the scrap would continue to the end. The team who scrapped for harder and longer would take it out. It went goal for goal in the last term and despite on a couple of occasions getting within a kick, we managed to hold them off coming away seven point victors. It was a huge credit to the boys for holding up and not conceding the lead at any point.

A massive thanks to Gavin Murray, Martin Shannon and Rambo for flying over for the game and we look forward to having you over here in the red and blue later in the year.

Goals - Roberts 2, Bevan, Carter, Grundy, Jefferys
Best Players - H.Lahy, J.Carter, H.Phillips, DJ, D.Bevan, Richo
