RD5 '18: Demons vs Swans (Prem)

Frank Caldow | 15.06.18

Wandsworth Demons 17.13.115 def London Swans 2.2.14

After 3 weekends off footy there is always a risk of being jumped and to Swans credit they did start well getting plenty of inside 50 entries early. Our defence led by Richo and Bowler held the line at one end and just before the 10 minute mark we managed to break the deadlock and kick the games first goal. For the next 10 minutes we completely dominated possession piling on 5 goals before Swans had a few late charges but to no avail, the quarter ending 5.1 to 0.0. A really good effort by the back 6 to keep the opposition scoreless considering the Swans did have about 10 inside 50s for the quarter.

Early on in the 2nd quarter it was clear we had the game on our terms with big Gavin giving us first use with Jayden and Jordan racking up bulk midfield possession. Rousey, Bevan and Brayden found space deep forward we went into the main break 10 goals up.

The third quarter was much the same with our midfield group again being on top and allowing us to control the game without completely dominating. Hugo was again influential on the wing, winning plenty of his own ball, whilst applying bulk pressure to the opposition. Rambo who was playing his 2nd game for the club showed good composure across half forward and back and Joe Lloyd looked to have recovered from last match's concussion, consistently winning 50/50 contests.

The trend of the match continued in the last term with us again controlling the momentum without dominating. Premiership winning fullback Sam Bowler in his last quarter for the club was swung forward and snagged 2 goals. We continued to play out the game on our terms, which was pleasing to see. It will be a very different game this week with the return leg of the Grand Final rematch against the Lions up at Bounds Green. The Lions who have been in good form will be out to draw blood, having not beaten us since 2015. Combine this with our last two victories being by a grand total of 10 points the match has plenty riding on it for both teams.

Best: J.Carter, G.Murray, B.Irving, J.Pollard, R.Richardson, D.Jordan, H.Phillips
Goals: Rouse 4, Irving 3, Bevan 3, Bowler 2, Carter 2, Ricky, Pollard, Murray
