Rd 4: Demons vs South East London Giants (Women)
Mitch 'Boxy' Skelly | 25.05.16
Demons 5.6 (36) def. South East London Giants 4.0 (24)
Following the disappointment of a loss the previous weekend the Dee’s set out to kick start their season against the Giants. Having lost to the Giants in the preseason cup we knew we were in for a tough game against an improved side on their home ground.
The match started well with Wandsworth having the majority of the play whilst kicking with a strong breeze. From the outset Rose was running out of the midfield and didn’t stop running all day, she was well supported by Kaz in her first game, Onora and B. The first quarter was a low scoring affair, however we looked like the team to beat with a dangerous forward set up of Socksy and Screech deep in attack.
Kicking against the breeze in the 2nd quarter was more of a challenge, however the game started to open up and our wing rotations of Linda, Tessa and Rogle were getting heaps of the footy. As usual Townsy was buzzing around the forward line creating options and working up the ground to support the midfield, finishing the game with 2 goals was a solid return. Annie also kicked a goal on debut and was a welcome addition to the forward line. Socksy and Crabs both had dominant games in the ruck, possibly some midweek coaching from Al Skelly has paid off and we’ve finally found a use for him since “Skelly’s wheel” got canned?
It was the 3rd quarter where the Demons blew the game open with their running game and quick ball movement into the forwards. Jess Calam picked up plenty of touches in the forward half and a great team goal saw Becks handball over to Linda to get her name on the scorers sheet. Going into the final break leading 5.6.36 to 0.0.0 the Dee’s were in control with the backline shutting everything down and the midfield #KillingIt. Katie and Princess were providing the run off half back, whilst Cassie, Shivvy and Nips gave away nothing.
In the final quarter some changes were made seeing players tried in different positions and a bit of complacency set in. The Giants kicked 4 straight goals to our nothing. Fortunately we held on in the end to win by 12 points, however a valuable lesson was learnt that you can never stop running until the final siren blows. Despite the shaky last quarter it was a great team effort and picking best players was a real challenge given how many girls played well. We have a Tuesday night intra-club game to tidy up a few things before a weekend off. It will then be a really important week on the track as we prepare for the Hawks on Sunday week.
Goals: Townsy 2, Annie 1, Linda 1, Calam 1
