We knew that we were in for a tough Saturday coming up against the second ranked Lions at their home ground. We only just got the win in our first hit out, and were looking forward to another close match. The Lions came out on top in the first five minutes, lucky for us they were running up the hill and into the wind, which gave us a chance to settle. From then on it was tightly contested competition with spectators commenting on how high the standard of women's football is in London. We made the most of our downhill advantage with Nom and Katie scoring cracking goals putting us ahead.

We knew we had to keep the momentum in the second quarter and our defence stepped up. Trucker made the move to half back and was instrumental in stopping any attacks ably helped by the back line including Prip, Springs and Becks. Spud managed to slot one up the other end, before the Lions hit back with a goal of their own. Thanks to Karis, B and Laura K holding down the midfield we went into the third with hard fought lead.

Running with the wind again we had plenty of opportunities and our forwards were looking dangerous but the Lions defence were unyielding. A beautiful bit of team play saw GNat put a step on to get into space right in front of the goals with a beautiful kick straight through the middle to finish off. Nom and Katie were helping to keep the ball in our fifty and continually probing forward. We would have liked more of a comfortable lead going into the fourth, but we were sticking to our game plan and knew we could hold them off.

The fourth quarter was played mainly in the Lions half but our defence stopped them again and again lead by our fullback Prip. An unfortunate 50m penalty resulted in another Lions goal, but the last 10 minutes showed our determination with the mids and the defence thwarting any opportunity the Lions had. Sez had a great game in the ruck and was everywhere and Vicky was involved on the wing smothering and tackling the Lions big dogs constantly.

At the end of the day both teams played some of the best footy we've seen in four seasons and the fact we came away with the win is a testament to our strength. A huge and tasty thank you to Libba for stepping up to coach in Mitch's absence and sacrificing precious tinny drinking time. We're looking forward to what the rest of the season brings!
