Wandsworth Demons 12.14.86 def Wimbledon Hawks 0.1.1

It was a hot and sweaty Saturday at Motspur Park as the She-Dee’s maintained their undefeated run for 2018 in the Women’s Premiership. Before going onto the game credit must go to the Hawks for pulling a team together and putting on a great BBQ and boat race, they were low on numbers during the week so we are grateful to get a game in. Also thanks to Mel Jolly, who filled in for the Hawks, Crocodile Nick, Onora and She-G for running the messages and interchange, as well as anyone else who helped out on the day.

Kicking up hill and into a breeze for the first quarter was a challenge, however the midfield got us off to a super start thanks to some solid work from Sez in the ruck. Our forward line looked dangerous and you could tell Linda and Spud were eyeing off a few snag rolls, however we had to settle for more than our fair share of behinds. Unfortunately for the Hawks after 3 of those behinds they kicked the ball straight to the overhead marking machine that is Crofty and watched the ball fly back over their head, for more behinds. After 15 minutes of footy we came in to the break on 2 goals and 8 behinds.

Scoring got a little easier in the 2nd term, however the Hawks also played their best footy, putting our backline under pressure. With Prip and Becks mopping up, and Guns having a really solid first game, it was never going to be easy and the Hawks could only manage 1 point for their effort. Down the other end Nom Fim toe poked a little “Joe the Goose” for her first major, Whilst Vicky Liv was not allowing the Hawks any easy ball with her relentless pressure, taking on the England Rugby players who would literally double her weight. At half time it was Demons 5 goals 10, to the Hawks 1 point.

The 3rd quarter was the best of the game from a Demons perspective, the ball was moving with more fluidity and this was typified by a great piece of play involving a Noodles mark and ending with a goal to Linda. LK, B, Karis and Trucker were really turning up the heat in the middle, whilst our backline continued to keep the Hawks scoreless. Spud and Linda were still unstoppable, with 4 and 3 goals for the match, however it really was a team effort with all 24 players having a positive influence. Up by 65 points going into the final term it was time to mix things up!

With Tester and G-Banger on the wings, Crofty at full back and Maddy as a forward, there was some chances for fresh legs to run out the game strong! Porta and Spud looked comfortable in the midfield and we were able to put on another 3 goals, with Noodles and Maddy snagging their first majors for the season. In the end the She-Dee’s ran out 85 point winners and look forward to another road trip next week as we take on the Giants at Peckham.

Goals – Spud 4, Linda 3, Crofty 2, Nom, Noodles, Maddy Murphy
Best – Team effort, too many good players to name them all!
