RD9 '18: Demons vs Magpies (Men's Conference)

Tony "Whitey" White | 20.07.18

Clapham Demons 9.5.59 def Putney Magpies 4.2.26

Round 9 saw the Conference boys take on the Putney Magpies who were second on the ladder. It was another hot day on the common and with 16 a side it was going to be another tough slog.

The battle for most of the day was in the midfield. Both midfields matched up well which resulted in a very even contest. In the first half the Putney boys just got the upper hand but unfortunately for them this didn’t result in scoring opportunities. This was down to some great work from our backmen, particular mention to big Kiser returning from his month long ‘work’ trip in Russia, first gamer Max certainly held his own and the old boy Mitch Skelly continued his good form this season.

Down the other end, it was Harambae in a new role up forward and Smokey who were causing plenty of headaches for the Putney backs.

At half time we held a 4 goal lead but the feeling amongst the group was that we had plenty more to give.

The boys were asked for a big effort in the third, and they certainly delivered! The midfield got back to their brilliant best with H, Metcalfe, Moore and Fintan leading the charge. Our tackling pressure was through the roof and we appeared to play with real intent. Special mention to Barca who provided a brilliant three effort contest deep forward resulting in a crucial turnover for the Dees. Great work Barca!

At the final siren it was the dees running out 33 point winners.

Round 10 and the final home away game of the season see us come up against the London Swans.

Finally, a big thank you to The Basin and Benny Chan who helped out and pulled on the Magpies jumper this week. Apart from The Basin getting in the way of a Jay Moore goal, it was a terrific effort by the boys.

A big two weeks on the track as we prepare for a big end to the season!

Best players: H, Max, Al Skel, Fintan and Metcalfe.

Go Dees!
