RD10 '18: Demons vs Swans (Men's Premiership)

Frank "Frank" Caldow | 25.07.18

Wandsworth Demons 28.14.182 def London Swans 3.2.20

The final round of the season saw us make the longer than an hour journey out to Hackney Marshes to play the London Swans. Another week of 25+ degrees days without rain saw their ground bone dry a with a touch more grass coverage than the common.

For the first 10 minutes the battle was on with both teams having multiple f50 entries without any majors being scored. We finally broke the deadlock and for the last half of the quarter started to get right on top finishing the with 6 goals to 1.

The second quarter we broke the game open and got right on top in the midfield which saw nearly the whole quarter played in our forward half, piling on 11 goal to 1. Brayden was dominant forward for centre kicking 6 of his 7 majors in the first half, several from well outside the arch.

The 3rd quarter we again kept the muscle flexed, keeping Swans scoreless whilst having 10- scoring shots for a 4 goal return. The last quarter we maintained the dominance kicking 7 goals to 1 to complete another 4 quarter domination.

It was again very much a team effort with it hard to find a losing match up across the ground. Papps and Lloydy helped hold the line in the back 50 in the early part of the game and Andy Smith went down to fullback for the 2nd half where he directed traffic and used the ball well proving an old dog can learn new tricks.

In the midfield Pollard and Irving again showed their class dominting on both the inside and outside. Soon, Borgy and Ben Ryan all did plenty in their last games for the club, they will be missed but we wish them all the best. Jayden in his first game back found plenty of space and showed how dangerous he is at hitting up f50 targets.

The forward line again worked well for each other with a focus of keeping out of each others space. One-on-One Rouse and Dickfos were too big and strong for their direct opponents. Lester and Hugo again showed they have an innate ability to play the game by bringing high pressure to the contest causing turnovers whilst also winning their own possession and hitting targets.

A huge thank you again to Gavin and Rambo for again making the journey over from Ireland and we look forward to seeing you in the coming weeks.

This week we play Wests for a spot in our 3rd consecutive Grand Final. Coming off a 56 goal fortnight the biggest challenge will be to get in the right mindset to tackle what will definitely be a tough 4 quarter slog against quality opposition who beat us just 3 weeks ago. The reward for winning is being able to enjoy a week off, if not we return to Hackney Marshes for a do or die battle to keep our season alive.

Best: Irving, Pollard, Rouse, Bell, Carter, Papps, Borg

Goals: Rouse 9, Iriving 7, Dickfos 3, Carter 2, Roberts, Bell, Phillips, Pollard, Smith, Lloyd
