Semi Final '18: Demons vs Raiders (Men's Conf.)
Tony "Whitey" White |
Clapham Demons 6.8.44 def Shepherds Bush Raiders 6.2.38
The first semi-final saw the Conference boys face the Shepherd’s Bush Raiders for a chance to go straight to the big dance. Both teams match up very well and with testing conditions on the Raiders home deck it was always going to be a tough game.
The Demons won the toss and although the wind was a largely a cross wind, there was a slight advantage to our end that we needed to make the most of. As expected, both teams came out firing, the pressure was up and there was no easy possessions. The Demons midfield led by H were relentless in their pressure and managed to create a number of opportunities up forward. Shots on goal didn’t come easy, but it was Barca and Joe Lee who bobbed up and snagged the first for the Dees.
The Demons entered the second quarter holding a narrow lead, knowing we had to hold up against the breeze. In what turned out to be our best quarter for the game, the Demons were able to get on top across the ground, kicking back to back goals through big Charlie. The backline were holding up well with Kirby and Mitch defending well and setting up a number of attacks. A late goal to the Raiders saw the half time score, Demons 6 goals to the Raiders 3.
Given the quality of the opposition, we were well aware the Raiders would come again. To the Raiders credit they grinded away, and while scoring was tough, the Raiders managed to slowly peg back. Whilst keeping us scoreless, the Raiders managed to snag a few themselves as we went into three quarter time holding on to a 12 point lead.
The last quarter was certainly an arm wrestle. The Raiders kicked the first and looked to have the momentum. With 5 minutes to go and holding onto a 6 point lead, the Demons boys were able to hold on for a fantastic win! Hats off to both teams.
While not the greatest football to watch, a great contest where both teams had a huge crack.
Always good to be on the winning side of these wins and showed real fight from the boys. It’s off to the Grand Final, well done fellas!
Let’s all get down to training as we work towards the big dance.
