RD3 '19: Demons vs Wildcats (Women's Premiership)

Wandsworth Demons 8.7.55 def. West London Wildcats 1.0.6

WEDNESDAY NIGHT FOOTY! A night normally reserved for State of Origin (at least in the eastern states), our prems girls got to play our cross town rivals the Wildcats in a rare night fixture on the common. Rain looked like it might threaten the evening, but stayed away for a cracking night.

We had the dominance early, and played largely in our forward half. Coming off two wins, we were full of confidence and it showed. It was good to see our strength of moving the ball away from contests and getting clearances still working well, however against better opposition, our disposals weren't as crisp and didn't quite hit targets in the first half.

Despite this, we persevered, knowing we would win out with pressure and moving the ball forward. The forwards did a good job on converting, a focus for the week after kicking 15 behinds last game.

The ball did come down to our defence a couple times, after they soccered it along the ground several times to catch us off guard. Our defence held firm, getting back to smother the chances, in particular forcing 3 boundary throw ins on one occasion, deep in the pocket and eventually rebounding without the Wildcats getting a score.

The 2nd half was where I was really proud as a coach. Our movement around the contest has been improving every week, and in the 2nd half, we started creating handball chains to running targets, and playing fast, flowing footy. Clearing kicks were happening in front of the contest now, and hitting leading targets. From there, we couldn't lose, and piled on a few late goals.

Emily Rohr was one of those who started receiving the ball from the contest while running and kicking it long. The last quarter was her best I think, as she seemed to be getting it every 2nd contest.

Tenae Leitch had a run in the mids, moving from halfback where she played the last two games. A coaching masterstroke, if I say so myself, as she got plenty of hands on the footy, skills were nice and made good decisions for someone new to the game.

We finished 8.7.55, to 1.0.6, more goals than behinds 💪

A week off for us, but hopefully continuing the flowing football into the next game #FILTFC
