RD4 '19: Demons vs Lions 2s (Men's Premiership)

Frank Caldow | 11.06.19

Wandsworth Demons 13.12.90 def. Regents Park Lions (2s) 0.2.2

Coming off a heavy defeat against the Wildcats and 2 weeks to think about what happened, it was crucially important that the Prem boys regrouped quickly as we enter the second phase of the season.

With a new game style in place and practiced over the preceding weeks it was time to put it to the test against North London Lions conference team.

Kicking against an awkward breeze our boys started well, winning most of the first quarter centre clearances and getting the upper advantage on the scoreboard. As the quarter progressed we did allow the Lions a few good scoring opportunities, but the defence held tight, being able to contain the opposition to just 2 behinds. We went into the first break with a 3 goal advantage.

Kicking with the breeze in the second term the instruction was to continue to look for the short 45° kicking options. This style of play allowed us to maintain possession and construct quality inside 50 entries, rather than blazing it long into the forward line in hope. As the quarter continued the midfield group continued to get right on top, keeping the opposition scoreless and kicking 4 goals from plenty of scoring opportunities.

The 3rd term we continued on our way, again keeping the Lions scoreless whilst adding another 2 majors ourselves. Despite kicking with the breeze, 75% of the quarter was played in our forward half. The last quarter we powered home piling on 5 goals and earning some much needed percentage.

A really good response by the boys to keep the opposition goalless for the game and scoreless for 3 quarters.

Brayden and Dundon were the two clear standouts for the day, dominating through the midfield and setting up much of our attacking play. Darcy Tayor had his best game for the club, winning plenty of inside contested football and Stewie Williams continued a fantastic season, finding plenty of football both down back and through the middle. Our ruckman from Nottingham Paul Watson was excellent in his first game for the club and we look forward to having him back later in the season. DJ in his first game for the season picked right back up where he left off in 2018, finding plenty of football and providing another composed outlet from defence. Our first gamers Rob Jordan and new cult hero Tommy 2 Pumps showed plenty in their first games of Aussie Rules and we look forward to developing them further over the course of the season.

We face North London’s first team this Saturday down at Motspur Park. After a Thrilling 1 point win in round 1, the reward for winning again will be a guaranteed top 2 finish and a double chance come finals time. All the best to the guys and if you are reading this come ready to play!
