RD6 '19 Demons v Raiders (Premiership)

Wandsworth Demons 12.6.78 def. Shepherds Bush Raiders 5.9.39

What a week! With many people away due to Glastonbury, Euro’s, the cricket and holidays to enjoy this beautiful weather, the Prem’s team fielded an inexperienced lineup to face the Shepherd’s Bush Raiders in mid 30 degree weather.

Again, with 17 changes to the previous weeks team, we are able to assemble a tight knit line-up featuring the boys from Turenne Tom “Pig” Shaw, Jayden “Chip” Carter, Dane “Fitness Freak” Coulson and Ryan “Hesso” Hessling.

After what was nothing short of shambles early, with the boys rolling out onto the field while still being strapped, we got off to a strong start with good ball movement being the feature. Pig and Chip looked dangerous early and we knew if we got the ball down to them, that they could kick a score for us. We went into the first break a couple of goals up.

The second and third term saw us continue to move the ball extremely well, spreading from the contest and linking up nicely in field play to continue to hold a solid 3-4 goal lead.

Mid-way throughly the third quarter, the boys kicked away and really put the Raiders to the sword. The game opened up with the heat and our boys were able to continue to work hard, link up by hand and foot and get a score on the board.

By the last break, the game was over with the attitude amongst the group being very up and about. Refusing to take the foot off the pedal, we piled on a number of last quarter goals to run away with a very impressive victory to the tune of 78 - 39.

For the Demons, Nick “I would have had 35-40 today” Dundon had the ball on a string in a BOG performance. Tom Shaw kicked a lazy 6 snags while being the key focal point all day. Jayden “I’m not leaving the goal square” Carter also chipped in for 3 sausages, while also kicking goal of the year over his head on the boundary line in the forward pocket. Just please don’t mention it in front of him because you’ll never hear the end.

Aaron Boatfield and Darcy Looker held together a very strong defensive line while Liam Hunter worked hard all day in the midfield.

Big Paul Watson was massive for the team all day, playing almost solely in the ruck to finish in the top 3 players on the ground.

Considering the circumstances surrounding the week and the uncertainty about what we could produce, it was an absolutely massive effort by everyone that played and represented the club on the weekend. It was some of the most enjoyable footy that I’ve watched this year and to come away with a 39 point victory against quality opposition was outstanding.

Next up we take on the West London Wildcats in what shapes as a blockbuster clash. Let’s hope that the boys can produce another strong effort to knock off our arch rivals. Go the Dee’s!!

Best: N. Dundon, T.Shaw, P.Watson, A.Boatfield, J.Carter, D.Looker, L.Hunter

Goals: T.Shaw 6, J.Carter 3, D.Coulson, N.Dundon, L.Rappazzo
