Wandsworth Demons 2.2 (14) def. by North London Lions 3.4 (22)
It was a windy start to the day, but with a full, fit squad I knew we were ready for a good fight.
After losing to the Lions in the first round, it was important to get ahead early in the game - and that we did.
We started off strong with Katie dominating in the ruck and challenging them at every step. First goal of the game went to us in the way of Screech who was on the end of a lovely kick and took a great mark.
At the beginning of the game I gave Hammond the task of shutting down the Lions’ captain. Throughout the game she stepped up to the task with some ferocious tackling. A little bit of confusion between us coaches put Tessa in a bit of a panic run around from forward to back. Eventually that settled down and she began to shut down the Lions’ number 5.
Unfortunately the Lions, although low on numbers, got ahead of us early on with some big kicks using the wind advantage. Princess and Coota solid as ever, tried their damnedest to shut down the midfielders running through. Becks played loose and ran hard and Damo put her body on the line and gave the Lions some big hits!
We ended the third quarter only down by 2 points thanks to a lovely dribbled through kick by Katie. We came out hungry in the last quarter and with the wind advantage looked like we may get up. Annie and Socksy were working hard defensively in the forward line constantly applying the pressure.
Rogle battled all day in her last game of the season, taking some great defensive marks. Our mids through Rose, Onora, Goldy and Kaz did their job and played hard man-on-man footy. Unfortunately the Lions snuck a late goal in with a few minutes to go and we finished with an 8-point loss.
As we are nearing finals time I urge you all to get to training and make sure you do extra fitness work. We’ve got some tough games ahead, but I know we have what it takes to challenge the two top teams!
Goals: Screech 1, Katie 1
