Womens Preseason Cup Report

Coach Skelly | 24.04.17

The She-Dee's headed out to Chiswick with a 35 player squad keen to get some footy under their belts before round 1. With only 3 matches guaranteed for the Dee's, 18 of our players were kind enough to get around the new sides who were struggling a little bit for numbers and play as fill ins. Thanks to those who represented the London Swans and Putney Magpies, hopefully everyone benefited from the extra footy.

In the group stages we took on the Hawks, GB Swans and the Lions. Against our AFL London counterparts, the Hawks and Lions, were able to keep the opposition scoreless and pile on a few goals ourselves. Throughout both of these wins our defence was impenetrable despite having at least 4 or 5 new players playing in the back 6. The midfield had great service from Fliss and Crofty in the ruck, allowing quick clearances to Betho, Socksy, Linda and Tessa.

In the group game against GB Swans we had a less experienced team on the park, however we still conceded less points against them than any other team prior to the final. MC proved herself as one of the best taggers in London Footy, while Juicey, French Steph and Amy "Swifty" Taylor battled hard to stop the opponents from scoring more.

Our semi-final was against old rivals the Hawks and played as a 16 per side game. Unfortunately the Hawks were a little undermanned by this stage, however that is not to discredit the Demons who were in scintillating form. The forward play of Vicky to set up several goals was epic, allowing Elle, FIFA and Sarah to get themselves on the scoreboard. In the midfield Tessa and B were linking up well and coming off half-back Pudge had a chance to show what she is capable of.

We went into the final against GB confident we could cause an upset with the constant improvements we'd shown all day. Unfortunately they jumped us with some early goals and we were unable to trouble the scoreboard (in fact GB didn't concede a point all day). The 2nd half was a much better showing, Nic D looked solid in defence and we tried our guts out to get a goal. Whilst it was disappointing to lose another final, the positives of the day far out way the negatives. The combination of old wise heads and super keen newbies, strength in every position and the ever present She-Dee spirit gives us a great platform to build on in 2017.

Tuesday night we have an intra club match, starting as close to 6.30 as possible where we have been training. Please get there as early as possible and ready to play with your footy gear and your Demons kit.
