RD2 '17: Demons vs Lions (Conf)

Tony “Whitey” White | 17.05.17

Clapham Demons 8.11 (59) Def North London Lions 4.3 (27)

If there’s one way to get the boys up and about, it’s ladies day! A delicious performance from the magoos to notch up the first win of 2017. And even more impressive for the ladies was the performance of first gamer, Jarrell! ‘The best rig running around in the magoos since Dick Benson‘ I overheard the crowd saying! Interesting call.

A big week on the track had us primed for the Lions and going into the game we knew it would be a hard fought contest. Kicking against the breeze in the first, our focus was on defence. The Lions had control for majority of the quarter but to our backlines credit, led by Fults, Mangoes, and Ki we were able restrict the Lions to 2 goals, and on the back of some great work from our mids we were able to snag 2 against the wind to go into quarter time only 1 point down. The first term was highlighted by Bubbles running back with the flight and didn’t blink an eye!

With the wind behind us, we went into the second term full of confidence. Unfortunately, it was a quarter of wasted opportunities, kicking 1 goal 6. Our midfield began to get on top via some great tap work from The Great Bambino but we failed to capitalize. To the Lions credit, their defence held strong and forced us into mistakes. Dees 10 points up at half time.

The first half was an arm wrestle and the third term was no different. We again played a great defensive quarter. Mitch Skelly was particularly prominent in defence, leading the way to restrict the Lions to 2 goals and we managed to kick 1 ourselves. At the final break we were 7 points up.

Despite the strong breeze favouring one end, if the first 3 quarters was anything to go by, kicking goals at either end was challenging. The midfield led by H, Ben Ryan and Sutton won clearance after clearance and we began to get on top. A big sausage to G and the Dees were up and about! We then went bang, bang, bang! The celebration from yours truly will certainly have Joe Lloyd questioning what game he was playing! A great final quarter where everyone played a role. The demons running out with a hard fought 5 goal win.

A brilliant team effort with plenty of contributors. Certainly an improvement from last week. Splitting hairs for the best performers but special mention to Jarrell in an outstanding first up game. H, Ryan, Sutton, Skelly, G and DJ really got us going through the middle. And big mention to our non Aus players in their first up appearances, Wardo, Barney and Joe Lloyd who all played a crucial role.

Thanks to Al Skel for running the messages and everyone else that helped out.
