RD3 '17: Demons vs Hawks (Prem)

Harry "Match Report Connoisseur" Dixon | 25.05.17

Wandsworth Demons 21.20 (136) def Wimbledon Hawks 4.4 (28)

What a great day of footy, a bit of sun and a casual game of cricket amongst the boys to get the adrenaline running and a bit of fun before the warm-up and game. Right before the game there was some rain, but nothing to deter the boys from playing a solid game of football.

Once the game started the boys were ready to run and didn’t they put on a show. Our Irish import Gav was rucking like he had been rucking for 15 + years, Rousey with a perfect turn and kick off his left foot saying “Here we go” and Tex making his season return in style picking off marks left right and centre.

As the game progressed, the Demons lead also got greater and greater, all thanks to the solid football movement the boys were playing throughout the ground and the intensity around not giving up. Frank and Harry decided to move some of the team around to give them exposure to different positions and get some miles through their legs. The change in positions were like watching a game of Mario Kart be played out. Rousey went into the middle, Rabbits onto the Wing, Gav into full-forward and Kracken into Ruck, now what a tall forward line that is!

Pup was playing a good game and the Hawks were making sure that every time he went for the ball or touched it, they would make sure he was hit hard and eating dirt. But in true Pup form, he got back up and kept going saying “Mamma-mia” not agin!

At half-time it was very good mood amongst the gents, the Demons had a good lead but the message was once again communicated strong and clear that to win a game of football it takes four quarters not two! So the Demons did exactly this.

Rickie was running up and down the wing with style, taking a mark, kicking it into the oppositions hands, rebounding back into his hands, running through defenders and then going on to kick a great goal!

Once again Gav was rucking with style, hitting a restart from the centre bounce outside the square and into our forward 50. The Demons were hot on the trot, cleaning up and kicking another goal.

As the game progressed, so did the skill of football. Durance was in space whenever the ball was kicked to him, which resulted in a switch to the other side of the ground and a mark by Rabbits (who was playing on the wing) about 60 metres out! Rabbits took his time to go back, think the shot through and also plan his goal celebration in his head. Rabbits kicked it beautifully through the two middle sticks and as he had planned in his head, it was worth the wait for the goal celebration.

Sammy Drake and Nafan were switching between half-forward and half-back and playing great football amongst the two of them.

The game was finished off the same way the Demons started and played right until the final siren. The boys were in high spirits at the end of the game and ready for our first home game of the season next week against the South East London Giants. “Now that's all sorted, I'm going back to sleep" and “we will meet again!”

Best for the day: Rousey, Rabbits, Sammy Drake, Tex, Rickie
