RD5 '17: Demons vs Giants (W.Prem)

Mitch Skelly | 08.06.17

Wandsworth Demons 12.12 (84) def South London Giants 0.0 (0)

Having lost to the Giants in round 3 the words "redemption" and "revenge" had been thrown around in the lead up to Friday nights pre-Epsom throw down... it's fair to say this was achieved with a little bit of interest on top, order has been restored and another clean sheet victory has been achieved. Whilst there are a few areas to work on, this was a complete team performance from a squad with no AFL pedigree and some quality players to come back in. To have held every opponent scoreless is testament to all of the hard work put in at training and the way everyone has bought into the style of football we want to play. What's important now is to go on with the great start to the season, look to improve each week and ensure the ultimate goal is achieved.

Onto the game...

It looked like conditions could be a little slippery and heavy following the Friday downpour, however the Common came up and absolute treat and conditions were perfect for footy. Thanks to the lads that came and helped out at the Alex, Kraken was working overtime to help us get all the equipment across. The first quarter was a great one for the Demons, time and time again pumping the ball inside 50 to the advantage of our forwards. Linda, Socksy, Crofty and Noodles are proving to be strong targets, but the damage was done when the ball hit the deck, Tessa was absolutely everywhere and finished the quarter with all 4 of the goals to her name.

The 2nd quarter continued in much the same way, Crofty and Greg on top in the ruck, Gaby racking up possessions and more goals for the Demons. The midfield of B, Onora, Macca and Gaby was a great combination, winning the ball themselves and applying immense pressure on their opponents when they had the football. Up by 7 goals at half time we were able to make a few changes and set up the tantalising prospect of 2 Hankinson's in the midfield.

Pudge started quarter 3 in the ruck and the Hankinson show looked like it was about to move into overdrive before Tess copped a solid knock and spent the rest of the quarter taking a breather. This didn't stop the Demons playing some great footy, working the ball from half back to the forward line with some slick ball movement. The back line was solid as a rock all night, marshalled by Becks and with dashing runs from Trucker and Amy Tay Tay to set up attacks.

The final term saw a few more changes including Pudge to full forward and Socksy to full back! We finished the game really strong, Tessa picked up her 5th and even handballed to Pudge for a "Joe the Goose" goal. The forward pressure from B and Vicky was relentless until the final siren and Friday night footy was a huge success for the Dee's.

This was probably the hardest game to pick best players for, so I apologise to those that missed out!

Goals - Tessa 5, Linda 2, Beth 1, Socksy 1, Pudge 1, Noodles 1, Onora 1
Best - Tessa, Gab, Pudge, B, Macca
