Demons 7.7 (49) def Raiders 3.2 (20)
It was a real important week for us coming in against the top side Raiders. With Whitey unavailable, Boxy took the reins for the day and set about ensuring that as a group we started to focus on the style and game plan that our coach wants to take forward for the rest of season.
Kicking into the breeze in the first added importance to the start of the game. The team as a whole played a really solid quarter of football, particularly the backline. A quick two late rebound goals had us up at the first break.
During the second we were able to slightly lengthen the lead and whilst we didn’t necessarily cash in with all our opportunities, the team certainly transitioned well from the defensive first quarter efforts into some well-structured forward half pressure. The likes of Andrews and Jeffers were getting their hands on it in the middle creating opportunities, while Biggsy and Strelec rucked well all day, providing good structure to the wall along with defensive targets down back.
The group started well in the 2nd half and with the injection of Jarell into the middle, we got the jump on them and that crucial first major of the quarter. From there the defence again lifted and knowing how much the Raiders were going to come at us, really kept their counter attack at bay. Mangoes and NZ Richie both played important roles on key forwards for the Raiders, Fults was excellent all day and Boxy played the lose man role exceptionally well providing the additional assistance to the back six where required and also delivering some attacking rebound.
The game lost a little bit of sting in the last. As a team though, we ran the game out well which was a good effort given that our mids, wingers and half forwards worked hard all day, running both ways and keeping man on man with the Raiders. A strong team effort and one to continue to build and improve on.
