RD8 '17: Demons vs Hawks (Prem)

Frank Caldow | 07.07.17

Demons 11.12 (78) def Hawks 5.6 (36)

It was our final home game of the year and the Common delivered a corker of a day for it. The boys were well rested after a week off and with 10 changes from the previous game there was always a risk of being jumped by a determined opposition who are on the cusp of playing finals footy. To our credit we got out of the blocks early and controlled possession for the most part of the first quarter earning ourselves a 4 goal lead. Alan's tap work was impressive, giving first use to Jeffers and Dimasi who set up plenty of forward 50 entries early.

As the game wore on it was effectively a 50/50 contest with the Hawks fighting hard around the ground. Had it not been for inaccurate kicking would have been a lot closer than the 3-quarter time 5 goals margin that stood.

Macca and Joey Forsyth were both impressive in their club debuts, Macca working his way into the game across halfback and Joey bringing his union background into the game, laying several big hits. Cooney's return from injury proved fruitful, snagging a couple of goals and presenting well all day. Big Andy and Ricci Bobby's attack on the contest was first class, displaying the brand of footy that we want to see as we come towards to pointy end of the season. Rabbits was clunking everything and Rousey was simply too strong for his direct opponent.

The start of the last term saw the Hawks make one final surge, but thanks to our defensive pressure, led by the ever consistent Sammy Drake, got back on top and finished the game strongly.

Best Players: Drake, Dimasi, Rabbits, Ricci, Alan
